Intellectual Reserve Inc and the Corporate of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons in the genealogy business), using the term familysearch in trademarks, are trying to prevent a man from using it for his web site familysearch.co.nz. Before a New-Zealand court, he argued that the words "family" and "search" are common words often used together by people making internet searches.
The fact that he is now using familytracing.co.nz and that familysearch.co.nz address is now inactive did not satisfy the complainants. Although familysearch.org.nz and familysearch.net.nz are still available in the New Zealand domain name register, the Mormon church requires ownership of familysearch.co.nz.
