Everyone knows there are many frauds linked to the growth of domain names. According to AFNIC (the French NIC), there has been a significant increase in the number of cases of slamming since the beginning of this year.
AFNIC defines "slamming" as "a variety of illicit practices ... based on deception and ... aimed at getting owners of domain names or brands to subscribe to unsolicited services related with their presence on the Internet," such as false renewal invoice, false register, or even psychological pressure (to have you buy names you do not want). These practices are not limited to the .fr zone.
To fight against these practices, AFNIC issued a guide (also published in English), where it describes different categories of slamming it identified, and their common characteristics. It also gives recommendations to protect domain names owners against it.
